Fallout 76 Torrent is an action shooter game developed and published by Bethesda Softworks. Fallout 76 represents another application of Bethesda’s well-established open-world RPG approach on an expansive map that’s larger than ever and beckoning to be explored. Upon exiting Vault 76, you commence your journey in a relatively serene forest, gradually progressing into riskier zones within the radioactive wasteland. Personally, I find traversing the expanse of the Cranberry Bog particularly captivating; from a distance, its pinkish-red fields seem inviting, but they reveal a complex network of trenches and otherworldly forests concealing the wasteland’s most terrifying secrets.
Roaming the varied wasteland of Appalachia unveils one of Bethesda’s notable strengths: the art of environmental storytelling. Stumbling upon a whimsical teddy bear orchestrating a makeshift drum set in an isolated shack suggests a past occupant’s boredom. Similarly, encountering a skeleton clutching flowers, a bottle of wine, and a stuffed animal hints at an interrupted attempt to express admiration before the world descends into chaos.
Fallout 76 Torrent lacks artificial human characters for interaction. The rationale behind this decision is that Vault 76 dwellers are tasked with being the pioneers in reclaiming post-apocalyptic America, resulting in a scarcity of coherent beings. Many survivors conveniently perished shortly before your arrival, contributing to the eerie atmosphere that permeates 76. This absence of established characters enhances the series’ ability to evoke feelings of desolation and otherness.
The mysterious and unfamiliar environment compels you to deviate from the established paths, explore remnants of the past, and ponder the events that transpired. Unveiling new landscapes, encountering different scenes, and discovering peculiarities constitute Fallout’s most enjoyable elements, and these are exemplified as 76’s standout features.
Engaging in combat with adversaries lacks the same impact in 76, a more somber consequence of the dearth of in-universe characters. Appalachia’s new region introduces a variety of mutated creatures, both familiar and novel, such as the Scorched and Mole Miners, humanoid enemies adept at wielding firearms. However, facing enemies devoid of personal connections or wrongdoing diminishes the enjoyment. The absence of sadistic raiders, intriguing gang factions, or thought-provoking ghouls and super mutants means every encountered being in 76 appears as mere cannon fodder.
Fallout 76 Torrent endeavors to implement innovative ideas for the series, yet, with a few exceptions, these innovations significantly constrain key aspects of the game. The multiplayer feature, while mildly entertaining, doesn’t offer an ideal avenue for mainline progression, and the shooting mechanics lack the strength to make combat-centric activities genuinely enjoyable. The experience improves when played solo, and the Appalachian landscape indeed holds captivating sights. Nevertheless, the dearth of in-universe characters and the inability to make a meaningful impact on the world makes it challenging to become emotionally invested in the overall journey.
