The Outlast Trials Torrent is an action survival game developed and published by Red Barrels. The Outlast Trials plunges you into the shadows with nothing but those goggles and what remains of your sanity, and once again, you can’t resist. Yes, it’s outrageous. Yes, it’s incredibly demanding – and demandingly intense. But besides the ominous entities lurking in the dark, you’ll encounter other hazards, too, like the shards on the floor and the never-ending auditory snares that will reveal your location.
There are mines and traps and that annoying individual who injects you with a whimsical gas inducing deathly illusions. Indeed, there are curative items to recover – and later, upon unlocking the “rig,” you can purchase the capability to restore yourself – but there are consistently insufficient resources, and never ample time to properly assess whether it’s worth sacrificing the lockpick to obtain a revive syringe… particularly as the item boxes are rigged to release gas if you hesitate too long.
And that’s the predicament with The Outlast Trials for me. I am, indeed, indecisive, which means I’m continuously being noticed and pursued and injured. It’s also why my end-of-trial evaluation is consistently embarrassingly subpar when compared to my teammates, although it was with some astonishment that we discovered that irrespective of whether you accomplish the mission objectives or hide in a bin, your final score seems to hinge on the number of times you suffered harm and/or triggered a trap rather than how cooperative a teammate you were.
In addition to your customizable rig – there are currently four options available; stun, obscure, mend, and x-ray, which essentially perform as described – you can also employ your triumph tickets to purchase underground prescriptions, too, which unlock, for instance, a new inventory slot, or the (awful) slide, which only appeared to exacerbate things when you’re being pursued. Eventually, you can unlock amps, too, which provide even more advantages, like the ability to swiftly restore your stamina while in hiding or don protective slippers that allow you to tread on shattered glass without creating any noise.
The surroundings are overflowing with blood, limbs violated flesh, and copious amounts of sinew. Entrails hanging from the ceiling, thrusting your arm into the abdomen of a cadaver, disfigured flesh adorning nearly every opening, it’s all on vivid display. I wouldn’t assert that The Outlast Trials Torrent Magnet is necessarily frightening, given how it’s all naturally integrated into the gameplay instead of meticulously curated tension-building and frights, but the appearance and atmosphere of the carnage are so potent it will undoubtedly make you wince.
The Outlast Trials Torrent will have plenty to keep engaged players captivated should you wish to immerse yourself in its cooperative madness. Following each trial, you’ll be assessed and furnished with XP and rewards (though going solo, I couldn’t achieve higher than a D… the true horror isn’t the violence, it’s the exam grade flashbacks from school). With the two currency rewards you obtain, you can then personalize your cell to your heart’s content and procure the previously mentioned enhancements.
