The adventure begins with both participants confined to separate chambers (to ensure nothing untoward occurs), and upon emerging, you find yourselves exploring a compact cabin together, gesturing and indicating various elements. Once the initial novelty wears off, the focus shifts to engaging in intricate puzzles. As we all know, the initial step in conquering an escape room involves thorough exploration and interaction with the surroundings.
The game’s puzzle components are strategically scattered throughout the environment, necessitating at least two rounds of exploration to utilize, collect, and examine everything at your disposal. It’s during these expeditions that you attempt to discern your objectives. For instance, upon leaving your initial chambers, your primary task might involve gathering scattered wheels, thoughtlessly dispersed across the area. Rather than being methodically stored, as any rational person might do, someone has scattered them. Eventually, prolonged scrutiny reveals symbols that correspond to yet unopened doors within the cabin, each concealing more puzzle elements. The challenges intensify from this point onward, occasionally bordering on convolution and difficulty rather than sheer enjoyment.
While the act of solving puzzles can be gratifying, there are instances where the complexity induces a feeling of frustrated relief. Surprisingly, we found ourselves enjoying a later section featuring simpler, quicker puzzles more than the intricate ones, as the latter often felt more like trial and error than genuine puzzle-solving.
Certain rooms also present a scenario where one player is significantly more occupied than the other, leading to instances of waiting, such as the gardening/poison mixing scenario mentioned earlier. Some of these scenarios even impose time constraints, leaving the idle player suspended in anticipation while their partner wrestles with a finicky mechanism. Compounding the issue is the somewhat awkward user interface of these mechanisms, especially when navigating through diagonally oriented structures using the D-pad.
It felt like contending with the controls was as much a challenge as solving the puzzle itself every time one of these situations arose. This sentiment extends to the game’s menus; the directional buttons’ unpredictability in determining the selection’s final destination adds another layer of frustration.
Visually, We Were Here Together Torrent boasts an appealing style. While the snowy wilderness may not be particularly noteworthy, it holds its own charm. Once inside the castle, the surroundings appear sharp and visually pleasing, with the exception of some casually strewn books. Notably, the lighting effects enhance the visual experience, such as the gradual intensification of the glow while pouring a luminescent potion, prompting an involuntary gasp at the spectacle.
