Initially, it does seem reminiscent of a traditional GTA-like game. After all, it still predominantly functions as a third-person shooter where you can hijack vehicles and proceed to create chaos all around you. However, swiftly, you begin to ‘disrupt’ the simulation with an ever-growing array of unlockable superpowers.
It doesn’t take much time for you to gain the ability to sprint faster than any car or leap higher than most structures – or cast fireballs, soar through the skies, and more. Consequently, Saints Row IV evolves into a comparable encounter to superhero/villain games like Infamous and Prototype. The primary distinction is the game’s absurd sense of humor.
While Saints Row IV doesn’t shy away from going wild on the gameplay front, there’s still a plethora of diverse activities to undertake. Its map is brimming with hundreds of mission indicators and thousands of collectibles that you can opt to interact with at your own pace. Consequently, this is a title that provides numerous hours of gameplay with its sheer volume of missions but can become monotonous if you decide to tackle every single mission available.
Nevertheless, owing to how Saints Row 4 Re-Elected Torrent Magnet consistently rewards players for every completed activity, the excitement of the payoffs can become quite addictive. The game scarcely imposes any barriers to your enjoyment – and that extends to the performance department as well. While the original rendition of Saints Row IV encountered some issues during its initial release on the PS3 and 360, the Switch version runs remarkably smoothly.
Even when zipping through the city, the game manages to maintain a steady performance. There’s a hint of pop-in and blurriness here and there, but overall, this is a well-executed handheld/console hybrid version of one of the most amusing open-world titles ever crafted.
Regarding tasks, the map is scattered with optional challenges for you to tackle, ranging from straightforward ‘eliminate every alien’ assignments to favorites like superpowered insurance fraud and tank mayhem. Generally, there isn’t a single mission type that overstays its welcome, except for the still-disappointing store hacking minigame. In a release that prides itself on the absurd, this excessively mild mix-and-match puzzle feels entirely out of place, and frankly, it’s surprising that it made it into the original game, let alone its re-release.
In a Matrix-style turn, your superpowers don’t carry over to the real world, where you’re on a spacecraft stolen from your malevolent alien adversaries. Consequently, during many of the main quests, you’ll have to rely solely on your aim as you eliminate your foes rather than freeze them solid and shatter them with a baseball bat. As a result, plot progression comes with a bit of a letdown, but fortunately, the story is entertaining despite a few disappointingly brief cutscenes, the writing is often comedic gold, and the missions themselves are varied and generally very enjoyable to play through.
Saints Row 4 Re-Elected Torrent is an unexpectedly solid adaptation of one of the most outrageous open-world games ever developed. Despite a somewhat antiquated structure, it presents an extraordinary playground where enjoyment takes precedence over everything else.
