Wanted Dead Torrent is the first game from developer Soleil and publisher 110 Industries, a pair that includes developers who gained experience in the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series. You play as Hannah Stone, a skilled fighter who’s good at slicing people with the precision of a master chef. Many people thought this game was older than it was because of its appearance. The design of levels in Wanted: Dead is basic, with not much decoration or polish. The levels are quite empty, mostly just long narrow passages, and feel lifeless. The graphics aren’t very clear, with dim lighting and less detail than I’m used to.
The enemies in the game are also limited, with only a few different types, all behaving and moving in the same way. The game seems older than it is because of this. Usually, graphics don’t matter much to me as long as the game is fun, but we’ll talk about that later. Right now, the game seems quite restricted, and the visuals get boring quickly. The game is set in a cyberpunk version of Taiwan, so it would have been interesting to hear characters speaking different languages but still understanding each other. Subtitles might not be everyone’s favorite, but I think most people would prefer good voice acting with subtitles over a bad dub.
The gameplay is very similar to the way the game looks and sounds. It feels old-fashioned, like classic hack-and-slash games such as Ninja Gaiden, which the developers of Wanted Dead Torrent Magnet come from. Everything, from the empty levels to the repetitive enemies, the simple sound effects, and the strange cut scenes, creates a feeling of nostalgia. It seems like it’s meant to be this way, but there’s one big problem: people might not understand it.
It doesn’t matter how “fun” a game is if people can’t figure out how to have fun. You need to make it easy for people to start having fun from the very beginning. I’m not saying make the game easy. I’m saying show a glimpse of what’s possible at the start. Why? Because most gamers stop playing a game within the first thirty minutes if they get bored. This is because of short attention spans and the desire for instant gratification.
To deal with the troublesome ninjas, you can use a powerful attack to easily defeat the brown ninjas and use a finishing move to finish them off quickly. The grey and white ninjas are harder to deal with, and you won’t have enough ammo to shoot them all, and grenades don’t work against them. So, you’ll need to use your sword attacks and, most importantly, be able to block their attacks. Everything starts to make sense now, and all the mechanics and abilities come together. It just takes time to reach this point because the game, even in normal mode, is easy enough that you can get away with playing it less efficiently. Unfortunately, that’s not the case in the later levels.
