Assassin’s Creed Unity Torrent is an action game developed and published by Ubisoft. AC Unity is a game of unimaginable summits and disappointing low points. Its peaks of movement, customization choices, and just the city of Paris itself shoot up like the spire of Notre Dame. On a purely technical level, Unity is a wonder to stroll through and appreciate. But simultaneously, a lot of my journey through the French Revolution felt as distant and unfeeling as the deepest recesses of the catacombs.
However, Unity’s narrative and its single-player missions do little more than skim over some of the finer aspects of the French Revolution and the struggling Parisians, the backdrop serving as an extravagant setting for Arno and Elise’s private escapades. Part of the delight of Assassin’s Creed has always been in how it investigates and plays with history, and—despite the advantages of an increased pace—that’s unfortunately been misplaced here. Where Unity’s more progressive elements thrive (and indeed, where most Assassin’s Creed games rarely waver), is in its combat and its missions. There Unity’s streamlined approach has resulted in a wonderfully unrestricted and gratifying stealth experience.
The capability to highlight potential kills for your teammates, as well as unlock abilities like shared eagle vision, do a commendable job of reinforcing this notion of teamwork. The most triumphant and enjoyable heists arise from assembling a diverse team, with some members concentrating on close-range assaults, and others assuming the forefront with long-range weapons and sniping any stray adversaries. The cooperative play is a pleasant addition then, if not the preferred multiplayer mode you might have wished for.
Integrating the cooperative play into the single-player campaign is a clever notion, and it creates more cohesive links into the storyline. But it also means that cooperative play is merely a side attraction to the action, rather than something you’d want to invest a lot of time and effort into. Regrettably, the exceptional competitive multiplayer from previous games doesn’t make a reappearance.
Speaking of weaponry, departed are the intricate crafting systems of old, substituted with a much friendlier cash system: accomplish missions, earn cash, purchase and enhance weapons and armor. This simplicity is beneficial, as there’s an overwhelming array of items you can acquire, all of which have some kind of impact on Arno’s skills. For instance, certain hoods extend the range of your eagle vision, while certain pants enhance your stealth capabilities.
The chest, forearms, waist, head, and legs can all be personalized to your preference, providing noticeable enhancements across melee, stealth, health, and ranged attacks, as well as a distinctive appearance if you choose to adjust the colors.
Not all of Assassin’s Creed Unity Torrent’s more progressive touches are for the better then, but you might spend more time noticing what’s old than what’s new. The superb city ambiance of Paris, the emphasis on parkour, and the rewards for executing stealthy assassinations, all these things indicate a game that’s attempting to revert to its origins after venturing out so wildly in its previous two iterations. Yes, Unity is the most ACII-like of the series since, well, ACII, and while it never truly reaches the soaring heights of Ezio’s escapade through 15th-century Italy, Unity’s similarities are reassuring enough to soften the impact of its less-than-successful changes.
