Blasphemous 2 Torrent is an action RPG game developed by The Game Kitchen and published by Team17. Stepping back into the shoes of The Penitent One, the game picks up shortly after the events of the DLC from the first game, but knowledge of that narrative isn’t necessary to enjoy Blasphemous 2. The mythology of Blasphemous runs deep, and you can engage with it as much or as little as you want through item text dumps and cutscenes. However, the majority of my satisfaction came from exploring the ever-expanding, nonlinear map.
Transitioning from region to region never failed to astonish me in all the finest ways. Uncovering a new NPC who can offer much-needed enhancements to my kit or accidentally discovering potent spells to add to my arsenal was always embraced, but nothing surpasses the sensation of figuring out where to proceed next. Gradually expanding the labyrinthine map through thoughtful exploration and new traversal abilities became a contemplative practice, only interrupted by areas I couldn’t access with my current moves or by the swarms of grotesque monsters that populate most rooms.
Novel terrors await in each region, and understanding their attack patterns is crucial for success. These adversaries deliver a powerful blow, and when they unite against you or corner you, it will likely result in demise. Fortunately, Blasphemous 2 provides you with fluid and responsive combat to conquer seemingly insurmountable challenges. Learning how to cut through enemy types that once troubled you never fails to gratify.
You can unlock and rotate through three primary weapons, each with its own skill tree and traversal abilities, ensuring you have a playstyle that suits you. When combined with various enhancements, spells, and equipable stat boosts, I was content with the level of personalization, even though there was no formal gear system.
At various junctures in my extensive journey through the Gothic delight that is Blasphemous 2, I feared the monstrous adversary in front of me would spell an end to my journey. But without these frequent setbacks, the triumphs wouldn’t be as grand. Blasphemous 2 draws inspiration from those that came before it, but by interweaving a stunning art style, enticing exploration, and rewarding combat, it ascends above the multitude of Castlevania-inspired action titles.
Blasphemous 2 is a superb Metroidvania and a significant improvement over the original, even if it did occasionally compel me to alter my lunch plans with its grotesque elements. What it lacks in originality with its design it more than compensates for with its peculiar world, shocking narrative, and inspired look and sound.
The new weapons and emphasis on platforming unquestionably assisted in sustaining my enjoyment for the campaign’s substantial duration, even when lackluster enemy variety and undemanding bosses left something to be desired. Its stomach-churning religious torture visuals might be a far cry from the charming world of Hollow Knight, but you’d be hard-pressed to find something better to play while you endure your never-ending wait for Silksong.
