Then, take charge.
It’s enjoyable because it offers something exhilarating to witness and participate in an amusement park attraction where I’m furnished with an airsoft rifle to pelt the animatronics. And it’s a splendid ride. There are pyrotechnics, high-speed pursuits, submersibles, and unmanned aerial vehicle assaults. One scenario involves rappelling down a skyscraper, and engaging guards through windows, only for the building to collapse while I’m still inside.
It encapsulates every action-packed scene Hollywood has envisioned over the past two decades condensed into five to six hours of exceptionally stylish interactive sequences, all wrapped in an unserious, harmless narrative centered around siblings striving to live up to their father’s super-soldier legacy.
While it is entertaining, it lacks engagement—Ghosts’ storyline is even more inert than recent point-and-click adventures from Telltale. In The Wolf Among Us, I confront choices. In Call of Duty Ghosts Torrent, I either conform to the prescribed path or falter. Annoyingly, even adherence to the incessantly emphasized “keep moving” directive can lead to my demise. Disregarding that repetitive dialogue is advised: reserve heroics for scripted moments, maintain a crouched position, and emerge sporadically to target adversaries.
Occasionally, I managed to distance myself from my unit, outflank the opposition, and vanquish them with a tactical advantage, but such strategic planning was a rarely encountered delight. It resurfaced in a jungle mission where a line of guards stood between my squad and me, equipped solely with a suppressed pistol and a sensor to detect nearby foes. That singular instance was when I was assigned an objective and left to accomplish it without explicit directives for every move.
It was also the sole occasion I possessed a miraculous enemy detection device, exposing another flaw in the campaign: it introduces intriguing concepts only to promptly abandon them. Initially, I met my canine companion, Riley, with the ability to mark targets for him to eliminate silently. I did so once, as instructed, and never again. Later on, I wield a remote-controlled sniper rifle to clear a stadium. It’s an impressive gadget I wished to employ independently on multiple occasions, yet it never reappears. Both weapons resemble toys I get to showcase in the store but never get to take home.
Call of Duty Ghosts Torrent Magnet’s multiplayer is a realm of swift decisions, mechanics, and errors—”ought to have assumed a prone position instead of firing, should have refrained from reloading after the last kill, should have pivoted instead of sprinting”—and it is remarkably intricate and entirely masterable. I admire those committed to mastering it, but its desolate and austere ambiance exceeds my preferences, feeling more like preparation for ceremonial combat than the enjoyment of a game.
