Delta Force Xtreme Torrent seems a bit empty compared to modern shooters. Back in 1998, when you played a “tactical shooter,” it meant you had computer teammates who sometimes shot at the bad guys. Nowadays, there are all kinds of crazy mechanics for taking cover and giving commands to your team, so if you’re looking for a tactical shooter like today’s standards, you won’t find it here. The idea of the game is that you’re an unnamed soldier in the Delta Force. There isn’t much of a story, except for short bits of mission briefings before and after each mission.
We’re not saying the single-player is awful, but there’s not a lot to it. You move from one point to another on the map, shooting all the enemies nearby, and sometimes blowing up a helicopter or weapons stash. Even though you’re just running around shooting groups of enemies, it’s still pretty fun. The enemy AI, while not amazing, is reasonably tough. And since you’re fighting against groups of enemies hiding in buildings and other spots, you have to be careful where you go, instead of just charging in with guns blazing.
Your teammates’ AI isn’t as good, but it doesn’t need to be. You only have two or four teammates, and they’re spread out across the map, so you have to meet up with them at specific points. Unlike the original game, they won’t get stuck in parts of the map. However, they still only sometimes take down enemies, and you still have to hit certain points on the map to get them to move with you.
The single-player part of Delta Force Xtreme Torrent won’t last long, but the real fun comes from multiplayer. When you’re playing against others, it can be chaotic but fun. Up to 32 players can play online, and whether it’s team deathmatch, capture the flag, or king of the hill, there’s always action and lots of shooting. It’s especially fun on maps with lots of vehicles, as it’s exciting to hop in a helicopter or man a gun on a jeep and blast away.
There are also cooperative missions where you and other players essentially do the same thing as in single-player, going from point to point and taking out terrorists. It’s not as exciting as the competitive modes, but it has its moments.
