DEVOUR Torrent is a horror game developed and published by Straight Back Games. Devour is an online game best experienced as a four-player co-op but can be played solo if you are daring. Once you conquer the game, there is a Nightmare mode that I assume intensifies the experience, not that it is obligatory! Choose from the four available characters and off you go.
You embark on your journey outside a substantial wooden residence in the midst of the night, equipped merely with a torch that also features a UV mode, beneficial for incinerating demons and briefly detaining Anna. Vaulting over the barrier into the garden, you stumble upon an intriguing-looking altar and commence gaining access to the house through the basement. Along the way, you unearth entries from Anna’s diary, providing additional context to unfolding events.
Playing in first-person, the controls are straightforward as you commence exploring dim chambers and eerie corridors for keys to unlock sealed rooms. Scattered throughout the residence and grounds, you will encounter medical kits, containers of fuel, and bundles of hay. Aside from keys, you can only grasp one item at a time, and it is prudent to remember where these items are for future use. DEVOUR Torrent’s game mechanics may sound uncomplicated, but in practice, I assure you, it is not as simple as it seems. To emerge victorious, all you need to do is locate 10 goats, place them on an altar, and ignite them. Simple, right!?
As you piece together what needs to be done, you will quickly discern that you are certainly not by yourself. The eerie moans, groans, and cries of Anna serve to send shivers down your spine, as does the muffled, bass-heavy sound of her leisurely traversing the house. Her distinctive body movements, coupled with a radiant crimson streak in her hair as she approaches, are rather unsettling. Evading her is your most effective strategy, as, let’s be honest, a flashlight won’t be of much use unless you can bounce it off her head, and unfortunately, that is not an option!
DEVOUR Torrent Magnet boasts an impressive appearance as far as indie titles go. The way the torchlight reflects off objects and generates shadows truly imparts an almost claustrophobic sensation, as if you are isolated and ensnared. The overall sensation of not knowing what awaits around the next corner until your torch illuminates it is genuinely disconcerting. Inside the eerie wooden residence, it is easy to become disoriented as you navigate through various rooms with connecting doors. When engaging in co-op, your comrades can easily startle you, particularly if they are attempting to pass by you and “collisions” are enabled.
If you desire an immersive game to truly push you out of your comfort zone and relish a good jump scare or three, then DDEVOUR Torrent is the game for you. It possesses qualities reminiscent of Phasmophobia; however, Devour, in my perspective, elevates the experience by compelling you to exorcise the demon and manage the chaos that ensues.
