Fallout 4 VR Torrent is an action shooter game developed and published by Bethesda Softworks. Strolling through the remnants of Boston in Fallout 4 VR is a solemn encounter that enhances the authenticity of the post-nuclear world. Fallout 4 clearly wasn’t designed for this, as the problematic Pip-Boy menu system exemplifies all too well. Nevertheless, you can navigate and protect yourself adequately. If you have a high-end PC and an HTC Vive, and you love Fallout, it’s challenging to resist.
The menu choices provide a reasonably adaptable VR experience. By default, it’s configured for teleportation, with the indicator shifting from blue to green if it’s distant enough to deplete your stamina. Transitioning from teleportation to seamless movement results in a pleasant stroll through the wasteland if you can endure it. I couldn’t get smooth turning to function, although there seems to be a menu option for it. That left me with incremental turning when I reached the limits of my Vive’s cord.
As Fallout’s combat revolves around shooting, grabbing a firearm and obliterating mole rats and raiders feels rather satisfying. It’s not as seamless as a VR shooter designed from the ground up, such as Robo Recall or Superhot VR, but it’s not subpar. You can also strike enemies with your pistol. When a group of feral ghouls confronts you, employing VATS to immobilize them for a few automatically aimed headshots is a game-changer. And if you believed Fallout was graphic before, you haven’t witnessed anything until the blood and eyeballs are splattering directly at you.
The combat in Fallout primarily involves shooting, and wielding a gun, and dispatching mole rats and raiders feels quite satisfying. It’s not as polished as a VR shooter specifically created for the platform, like Robo Recall or Superhot VR, but it holds its own. Additionally, you have the option to pistol-whip enemies. When faced with a horde of feral ghouls, activating VATS to halt them for a series of auto-aimed headshots proves to be a lifesaver. And if you thought Fallout was gruesome in its regular form, you haven’t truly experienced it until the blood and eyeballs are spraying directly toward you.
Before diving in, a couple of cautions: while Fallout 4 VR Torrent is operational on the Rift, the controls are currently impractical, so it might be wise to postpone that. Furthermore, it lacks any downloadable content (DLC), which is disappointing considering the content is over a year old. Presently, there is zero mod support – not even your saved games from Fallout 4 will transfer over to Fallout 4 VR for some inexplicable reason. Fallout 4 VR Torrent enables you to encounter the post-nuclear future in a much more personal manner. Its adjustment to the Vive’s hand-tracked Touch controls functions reasonably well for movement and shooting but poorly for navigating the Pip Boy’s cumbersome interface – a task you’ll need to perform frequently. Nevertheless, it’s worthwhile to endure this inconvenience to come face-to-face with Fallout 4’s characters, creatures, and landscapes.
