Streets will eventually shape spokes radiating out from the furnace, and you’ll line them with structures and steam towers to keep the ice melted—at least until the temperature drops even lower.
While my eyes flit restlessly over minuscule meters at the top of the screen—how much wood and coal and food remains, and how long will it last—I invest more time gazing at the larger meters at the bottom: dissatisfaction and optimism, the genuine indicators of my city’s well-being. Demand for a 24-hour work shift, and discontent will surge sharply, even as the additional labor preserves lives. Dispatching everyone to bed with satisfied stomachs will provide them with hope, even if they’re slumbering in freezing-cold tents.
If discontent rises excessively or hope diminishes too much, you may be informed that you only have a few days to overturn the trend by achieving a specific objective. Fail to deliver, and those meters will endure a setback, creating a delicate equilibrium. That lumber you employed to construct a steel mill instead of new residences might make your city ultimately more robust, but you reneged on a pledge to provide shelter for all, causing people to lose faith in you. It’s a skillful portrayal of the weight of leadership.
Frostpunk Torrent isn’t restricted to your frigid little city: there’s a vast frozen world out there, and once you’ve erected a lookout station, you can ascend above the rim of your crater and survey the surroundings, then dispatch scouting parties to scrutinize new areas of interest.
