Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice utilizes every element in its arsenal to perpetuate feelings of dread, anxiety, and fear: camera perspective, light, sound, visuals, and combat. There are no frightening monsters, no sudden surprises, none of the traditional horror elements. Instead, it taps into something infinitely more unsettling: human psychology. And it is remarkably successful.
Developer Ninja Theory collaborated with a team of mental health specialists, professors of psychology, and individuals recovering from psychosis to convey their experiences. The portrayal of the main character Senua’s hallucinations and delusions feels vivid, sincere, and terrifying. From witnessing literal fragments of reality to navigating mazes guided by a mourning ghost, every little action you take skirts the line between myth and frighteningly inescapable reality.
Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice Torrent begins with Senua, a Celtic warrior with severe psychotic mental illness, returning to her village after a Viking raid. Upon discovering that her lover was sacrificed to Norse gods, she embarks on a vision quest to retrieve his soul from them. Throughout Hellblade, she carries his skull wrapped in cloth, unwavering in her quest to negotiate with the Norse goddess of death, Hela.
Hellblade does a thorough job of saturating other ordinary moments with anxiety. Even armed with a sword, I still felt exposed when exploring a new area. The game only provides you with one prompt: Every time you perish, decay progresses up Senua’s arm. When it reaches her head, she will truly perish, and all progress will be lost. It’s a harsh and unforgiving mechanic, successful at adding a dense, weighty layer of tension and hesitation to everything I did.
But even in combat, the game piles on metaphor after metaphor. Sometimes I found myself fervently slashing at a boss for what seemed like an hour until wisps of smoke suddenly replaced decaying flesh. When the battle concluded and I relaxed my grip, the boss reappeared out of nowhere, seized Senua by the ankles, and dragged her to the floor. It became abundantly clear: There is no respite when it comes to inner demons, and Hellblade adheres to this theme in its brief but palate-cleansing battles.
Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice Torrent is a masterclass of atmosphere, storytelling, and the fusion of mechanical and conceptual design. While there are moments that feel forced to remind us we’re playing a video game, the care and attention Ninja Theory has evidently poured into Senua and her story has created something incredible. This is a game everyone should experience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have lived inside the mind of Senua, however briefly.
