Last Epoch Torrent is a type of action RPG that sits between simple and complex. You press a button to make lots of enemies disappear from a top-down view, but, unlike Diablo 4, it lets you craft things more deeply at any time for players who like small improvements in health recovery versus damage. It’s not as complicated as Path Of Exile, which is where expert players go when they lose. Last Epoch has been available for testing for some time now, so there’s a good chance you already have an opinion on it now that it’s fully released. If you haven’t tried it yet, I can say it’s quite good. Making a super powerful wizard is very easy, and I preferred it over Diablo IV, I believe.
Last Epoch has an offline mode, which is a nice option, and if you don’t like trading with other players, the 1.0 update lets you join the Circle Of Fortune, a group in the game that gives you extra loot benefits, making your adventures more rewarding. Most players will probably choose the Merchants’ Guild, which lets you trade with others, but it’s good to offer some bonuses to people who prefer to play alone. However, both of these groups are for late-game content, and you can’t join until you reach a high-level area in Last Epoch. Before that, there are about 20 hours of story to play through.
A lot of the game is about defeating the empire of an undead ruler who can make people immortal, so many of the bosses you fight in the future are people you’ve met in the past. This adds an interesting twist to the game. I think the developers could have had more fun with this idea, like having the big lightning crab boss shout that he always hated you during the fight, even though it’s the first time you’ve met him chronologically. But the developers really use the time travel theme well for the setting and enemies. With different time periods in the game, there are many locations in Last Epoch Torrent.
You also have a skill tree for your class and specialization. For example, a rogue might focus on increasing bleeding damage or using coated blades. After playing for a while, I built my archer to regenerate health because I was playing solo. One skill called Draining Arrows gives you health when your bow hits an enemy, so I combined that with Sapping Strikes, which steals health when you use an ability with no mana cost. This worked well with my main bow attack, which didn’t use mana. I crafted gear focusing on health regeneration and arrow damage, and soon I had an archer who could stand still and shoot enemies and bosses while taking damage. You can experiment with different builds for other classes too. I enjoyed trying to make a mage with spells that cost as little mana as possible, like a magical perpetual energy machine.
