Monster Hunter Rise Torrent is an action game developed and published by Capcom. The narrative has never been the focal point of a Monster Hunter game, so it’s no shock that the one in Rise is as thin as tissue paper. It’s conveyed through a meager few cutscenes where English voice acting is awkwardly dubbed to synchronize with what seem to be unaltered Japanese lip movements in a manner that does neither any favors.
This doesn’t diminish the excitement of the battles around those scenes, but it’s crucial to highlight that the enhancements World made weren’t solely mechanical. Its storyline wasn’t much denser, but it did offer a pleasant sense of exploration and continuity that made it feel like you were truly navigating its new continent.
However, minor issues like that are overshadowed by the substantial advancement Rise makes in the hunts themselves. Monster Hunter is about pursuing formidable monsters, and here the choices available, locations to combat in, and methods to do so are, overall, outstanding. Although the Switch’s relatively modest hardware means things don’t appear as sharp as I became accustomed to with World, it’s genuinely impressive how close Rise comes.
This includes how well it generally operates, as well as load times that are surprisingly swift both in and out of hunts. Capcom also deserves special acknowledgment for creating an online system that simply functions, allowing you to join the lobbies of your Switch associates with minimal hassle.
But one of Monster Hunter’s oldest and most effective tactics is that reaching High Rank – a more challenging tier of Hub hunts that amplifies the difficulty and rewards – doesn’t merely add more health and damage to each monster’s stats, it fundamentally transforms their encounters. You’ll witness some new maneuvers and more assertive behavior across the entire array, making the increased numbers only a part of what revitalizes their sense of peril. This is not a novelty in Rise, but it’s one of the most crucial aspects of what Monster Hunter accomplishes because it helps maintain the thrill of battles against the same monsters.
Regarding weaponry, visual diversity is immediately evident across the spectrum here, which seems like a direct response to a common critique of the World. Almost right from the start, designs range from incredibly formidable to ridiculously whimsical, although their appearances then don’t evolve as much as you enhance them.
Monster Hunter Rise Torrent amalgamates traditional Monster Hunter concepts with some of the World’s most commendable improvements and a plethora of ingenious new mechanics of its own. Not all of them are resounding successes, but they are all enjoyable – and the introduction of Wirebugs and the agility they bring to every encounter is so fantastic that I never want to relinquish them. The post-launch updates Capcom is already hinting at can’t arrive soon enough, but Monster Hunter Rise still marks a captivating progression in the series’ evolution towards the new standard World so boldly introduced.
