Neon White Torrent is a mix of exciting surf maps from Counter-Strike, the joy of time trials like in Trackmania, and the story-telling style of a visual novel with anime vibes. I haven’t played anything quite like it before, even though I know about the things that inspired it. Not everything fits together perfectly, though. The story builds slowly, which can interrupt the fast pace of the gameplay. But that doesn’t take away from the pure joy of playing through its 97 well-designed levels.
You play as Neon White, a sinner trying to get into Heaven by clearing it of demons. You’ll move, jump, and shoot your way through many different areas, aiming to finish each level as fast as you can while also defeating demons along the way. Most levels are short, but it’s the quick pace that makes it exciting. Finishing a level isn’t usually hard, but the real challenge is finding the best way to go through each level to save time and earn better rewards.
To help you out, there’s a cool thing called Soul Cards. These items give you different weapons and special abilities. For example, the Fireball card acts like a shotgun, great for close combat. If you get rid of it, you can do a quick dash that destroys enemies in your path. There are other cards too, like rifles and SMGs, each with their abilities to help you move around and fight better. You can only carry two different Soul Cards at once, so you’re not too powerful, but you can have up to three of the same card for more ammo and chances to use their special abilities.
Neon White Torrent Magnet does a great job of teaching you how to use Soul Cards quickly as you play. At first, you’ll only have a few to deal with, but soon you’ll be using up to six in a single level. It might sound hard, but it’s easy to get the hang of. You’ll learn how to use Soul Cards in different ways as you go along. For example, you might start by using a grenade to defeat enemies, but later on, you’ll use it to launch yourself into the air and save time.
Neon White is a rapid and irresistible initial-person platformer that’s remarkably straightforward to grasp and engage with, yet presents a formidable speedrunning test at its essence. Linking your combat alternatives to your movement mechanics, Neon White transforms each confrontation into a perilous parkour enigma that can be relived repeatedly, striving for the flawless run and the most precise time. The exchange among its disagreeable ensemble of angst-filled, anime-influenced assassins might be a cheesy misjudgment, but its impeccable stage construction and a superb feeling of impetus guarantee Neon White’s gameplay is a reason for applause.
