The story of the Prince of Persia The Two Throne Torrent starts with the prince coming back to Babylon from the Island of Time with Kaileena, who is now his girlfriend. As they arrive at Babylon, they see the city is under attack. Their ship gets wrecked by the invaders, and Kaileena gets taken by the enemies. It turns out the vizier is behind the chaos. He kills Kaileena and lets loose the sands of time on Babylon. The prince has to fight to reclaim his kingdom and get revenge for Kaileena’s death.
But it’s not just sand monsters and enemies from the vizier’s army the prince has to fight. With the sands of time affecting him, the prince also has to battle his darker, more arrogant side. Throughout the game’s long campaign, which lasts about 12 to 15 hours, the prince will switch between his normal self and the dark prince. He’ll also have conversations between his two personalities, with the original actor from Sands of Time voicing the normal prince, and a new voice actor for the dark prince.
Becoming the dark prince isn’t just for show. When playing as the evil prince, you’ll find yourself much stronger in fights, thanks to a new weapon called the dagger tail. This weapon is like a chain that can be swung around to hit multiple enemies or used as a whip. It’s also useful for swinging across bars or lamp fixtures. However, this extra power comes with a cost. Like playing as the sand wraith in Warrior Within, the dark prince loses health over time, which needs to be replenished by collecting sand from defeated enemies or breaking jars and furniture.
One new aspect of combat in The Two Thrones is the introduction of stealth kills, known as “speed kills” in the game. To perform a speed kill, you’ll need to sneak up behind an unaware enemy or drop down on them from above. Pressing a button starts the speed-kill animation, and you’ll have a split second to tap another button to strike at the right moment. If you mistime your strikes, the speed kill fails, and you’ll have to fight the enemy normally. You can also perform double-speed kills if you catch two enemies close together.
Apart from fighting and climbing, there are a couple of chariot race parts in the game, but they can be frustrating because one small mistake leads to failure. If you reach a chariot race section with few or no sand charges left in your dagger, be prepared for lots of trial and error to get through it. Another disappointment is that the sand powers aren’t as important in combat, especially towards the end of the game. Although you unlock some sand powers for combat, speed kills are usually enough to handle enemies.
Overall, Prince of Persia The Two Throne Torrent is a great game. The story is interesting, the characters are likable, the villains are despicable, the major events are thrilling, the art is impressive, the sound is excellent…and then there’s the gameplay. The classic Prince platforming is fantastic! The new focus on acrobatics to enhance combat is exactly what the series needs. But there’s always a hint of darkness amidst the light.
