Pyre Torrent is an action game developed and published by Supergiant Games. Pyre entrusts you with the role of an anonymous, unidentified character referred to only as the Reader. Expelled from your abode in the Commonwealth, a realm where literacy is prohibited, you become part of a modest yet expanding group of fatigued wanderers known as Nightwing, traversing a perilous and purgatorial expanse named the Downside. Yet, by executing a sequence of sacred rituals — ceremonies that you, as a Reader, officiate — you and the Nightwings stand the chance of securing your liberation.
It is within these ceremonies that Pyre unveils its most distinctive mechanics. The ceremonies themselves serve as a contest between two trios, each striving for an opportunity to return to the Commonwealth with absolved transgressions. Positioned at opposing ends of a compact map, each team has a flame. An energy sphere materializes on the map between the two teams, and your objective is to seize the sphere, submerge it into their flame, and persist until the adversary team’s pyre is completely extinguished.
There is more complexity here than initially apparent. Operating akin to a magical variant of basketball intertwined with a MOBA, the ceremonies disclose their intricacy gradually, unveiling new capabilities and character classifications from bout to bout. Initially, you grasp that ushering foes into your aura temporarily banishes them from the field. Subsequently, you learn how to protect your aura forward, banishing adversaries in its trajectory. As you progress, you gain insights into swifter or more potent characters, understanding their strengths and vulnerabilities, and encountering numerous minor adjustments to the formula throughout the game’s initial six hours.
Beyond the strategic intricacy introduced by each incremental variation, Pyre’s moment-to-moment mechanics and gameplay harmonize effectively. Navigating through the game feels satisfying, whether zipping around at high velocities or colliding into the center of the field as a larger character, sending everyone backward. Achieving an impressive move, ricocheting the ball between characters before plunging into the adversary’s pyre, evokes a sense of exhilaration. Although the matches were never overly demanding on Pyre’s default difficulty, I frequently found myself engaged in tense, gratifying confrontations where a lone goal on either side dictated victory or defeat.
Pyre Torrent Magnet also provides the option to customize the experience to your preference, extending beyond adjusting the difficulty level. You can equip talismans on your diverse players, bestowing them with distinctive advantages, such as the possibility of promptly rejoining the playing field upon banishment or instantly replenishing your stamina upon seizing the ball.
Pyre Torrent transcends the confines of a conventional multi-path narrative game to become genuinely exceptional with one pivotal design feature: You cannot incur defeat in the game. If you falter in a ceremony, your odyssey simply persists. If one of your adversaries attains freedom in lieu of your own exiles, you must simply acknowledge that outcome and its ramifications on the narrative, persevering forward. Occasionally, the game tugs at your emotional strings in ways that might tempt you to intentionally concede.
