Sons Of The Forest Torrent dares you to survive and discover new secrets on a lush, mild island that reminded me of hiking in the American Pacific Northwest. It’s about four times bigger than the original map, and it looks nice. The amount and different kinds of plants, some of which can be eaten or used as medicine, make the landscape feel full and rich, which isn’t common in this type of game. The way the light shines is also amazing. Clouds that partly cover the sun on a warm day completely change how things feel as I explore. It’s one of those small details that most games don’t pay attention to, but when one does it right, I notice.
But when you go deep into the island, cannibals won’t be your only problem. There are a lot more big, scary mutants in Sons of the Forest than in the first game, and they’re a lot more dangerous. I liked how the game focuses more on fighting, using it to build tension instead of just for fun.
Every time I fought a tough enemy or a big group of enemies, it felt like solving a puzzle about managing my resources. It reminded me of the best parts of Resident Evil or The Last of Us. Guns keep you safe, but bullets are hard to find. In close combat, it’s hard to win without getting hurt, which damages your armor and healing items. And if your flashlight runs out of batteries, you’re in big trouble. I’d rather run out of bullets and food most of the time than lose my light deep in a cave.
Even if you played The Forest and know how scary it can get, Sons of the Forest will still surprise you. And if you didn’t play the first one, get ready. The scary story starts with looking for a rich person and his family who disappeared in the wilderness, and it adds more supernatural stuff from the first game – not always stuff I liked, but it was never boring.
Sons of the Forest is an open-world game, so part of the fun is figuring out what to do next. You have a GPS tracker that guides you sometimes, which helps, but I wish I could mark certain places on the map. Without that, I had to keep looking at the Sons of the Forest map to find my way around. You do find GPS locators eventually, but needing them doesn’t make much sense to me. Unless you like wandering around aimlessly, it just makes the game less fun.
Sons Of The Forest Torrent takes everything the first game did well and makes it a little better. Since I liked the first one, I easily recommend this one too. Exploring a big, beautiful, dangerous island as the seasons change is fun by itself. The new base-building stuff could keep me busy for days without even touching the main story. And on top of all that, the enemies are smarter and scarier, and the fighting is improved. It’s already good, and it’s still in Early Access. With some fixes to make it run better and a better ending, it could be amazing.
