In the prison setting, strategic planning for your escape is crucial, interwoven with the daily routine of eating, exercising, roll call, and work duties. Building rapport with fellow inmates through quests, pilfering items, engaging in altercations, stealing keys from guards, crafting an array of makeshift weapons, and navigating ventilation ducts all contribute to the immersive experience. However, any misstep can be frustrating, as getting caught by guards results in confinement to the infirmary or solitary, accompanied by the loss of any contraband in your possession at that moment.
This frustration is amplified by the lack of manual saves. Mistakes set you back considerably, as the game’s autosave function, tied to online leaderboards, regularly updates. A desire for the ability to disable this feature in local play arises, especially when experiencing setbacks in regaining keys, equipment, and weaponry after a mishap.
A particularly exasperating incident occurred outside guard encounters. Prepared for escape with gear in hand and a decoy in the cell, an accidental press of the surrender button (PS4’s directional pad) disrupted the plan. The absence of a confirmation prompt led to an immediate failure, erasing meticulously executed progress in an instant.
Prison life’s routine progresses along a relatively foreseeable path on a map-by-map basis, with each correctional facility maintaining its unique schedule for the day’s activities, regardless of the specific date. The initial penitentiary, Center Perks 2.0, features a moderately laid-back day with ample free time to explore and carry out your plans, while the third location (Rattlesnake Springs) is more closely monitored and regulated.
Each penitentiary’s daily plan expects your presence or involvement in the designated hour’s events. Concerning meals such as Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner, it is imperative to enter the cafeteria before the hour concludes. Likewise, during exercise time, merely stepping into the gym is necessary to comply with the guards’ supervision. Violating these regulations will result in the prison’s security level increasing by half a star (out of a total of five), progressively intensifying the challenge.
After experiencing a few levels of The Escapists 2 Torrent, I formed a positive early impression of how the rest of the game would unfold and had the opportunity to explore the various enhancements made by the developers to the original formula that contributed to the game’s cult-like success.
There was not a single instance where I found myself yearning for a particular feature to be reintroduced from the original game, a testament in its own right. When compared to its predecessor, The Escapists 2 either matches or surpasses every aspect, incorporating new elements such as cooperative gaming, unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to try it out as my friends had obtained this title on different platforms.
