Trepang2 Torrent is an action shooter game developed by Trepang Studios and published by Team17. Trepang2’s rapid six to 12-hour campaign immerses you in the role of Subject 106, a standard super soldier archetype employed by the equally uncreative covert Task Force 27. Following an escape from an icy subterranean Alaskan prison, the next approximately 10 hours unfold in pursuit of the malevolent overlords of the Horizon Corporation – a Dr. Evil-like organization infamous for its unsuccessful endeavors in creating its super soldiers, among other nefarious plots. The ensuing narrative comprises a sequence of video game and action movie tropes executed with exaggerated violence, enabling me to willingly suspend disbelief – frequently in undisturbed delight.
However, Trepang2’s gimmicky and budget-friendly monsters made abrupt appearances on-screen in the classic jumpscare style. The story then seemingly disregards their existence entirely, thrusting me back into its gory military shooter-inspired action without more than a nonchalant response and an occasional intel entry featuring a grotesque illustration. It’s important to clarify that these monster encounters are indeed entertaining, but I feel let down that Trepang2 doesn’t fully embrace them.
Some well-crafted setups, such as an eerie nod to The Backrooms meme, establish a dark ambiance for certain battles. Unfortunately, these setups fail to maintain the story’s focus for more than a segment of one level at a time. Unlike F.E.A.R.’s Alma Wade, there is no character to sustain the steady tension of a more intimate horror story beneath Trepang2’s action. Consequently, the Horizon Corporation and its monsters come across as satirical rather than eerie, without clear indications that this is intentional.
Trepang2 Torrent Magnet serves as a distinct homage to the gloomy, blood-soaked shooters of the mid-to-late 2000s, without the excess melodrama that could impede pacing between skirmishes, akin to F.E.A.R. 2 or DOOM 3. It adeptly interconnects the corridors of its diverse military compounds and corporate strongholds, featuring boss fights that are generally enjoyable but straightforward, relying on a single gimmick.
For example, the Mothman chases you around a labyrinthine structure, only susceptible to damage on specific body parts, conveniently accessible while spewing acid. Meanwhile, each level’s corners and crevices are filled with weapon customization parts and fragments of intel that gradually elucidate a less-than-thrilling narrative.
The rhythm of Trepang 2’s combat revolves less around selecting the right weapon; every weapon proves effective in each battle scenario, whether wielding dual assault rifles or maneuvering through enemy squads with a single handgun. The emphasis lies in carving out the correct strategy. Apart from the standard enemy soldiers wielding SMGs and pistols, numerous enemy types in Trepang2 are shielded or armored, exclusively susceptible to headshots.
Trepang2 Torrent’s frenetic action consistently delivers a visually stunning experience. Sparks and blood scatter in all directions at impressively high framerates in 2K resolution, even when the on-screen action appears overwhelming for my now-aging GeForce RTX 2080 Super. While some of Trepang’s levels may appear dull and colorless like a typical shooter from the Xbox 360 era, the action truly flourishes in more detailed environments. In the Horizon HQ, the spectacle of chaos contrasts against arrays of LED panels refracting vibrant waves of light across the tower’s gleaming marble floors.
