UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes Torrent
UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes Torrent is unquestionably the most enjoyable fighting game of the year. An already polished and gratifying fighter has been enhanced and broadened on so many levels with the novel systems, mechanics, and moves this sequel introduces. If you’re going to engage in any 2D fighting game right now, opt for this one.
Initially, this game might not visually project itself as a genuine sequel – but akin to the recently unveiled Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, despite indistinguishable graphics and character models, myriad elements beneath the surface have been altered to render this experience leagues distinct from any preceding iteration of Under Night In-Birth.
Despite being a 3-button fighter where each character possesses merely a handful of distinct moves, there’s an immense depth and mastery to this series due to the layers of mechanics concurrently occurring during combat – and this sequel incorporates even more, in addition to bestowing each character with a minimum of two innovative moves. On paper, this might not appear to be a substantial amount, but in a game of this nature, where every character’s kit is already highly adaptable, these fresh moves impart astonishing quantities of new alternatives to everyone’s repertoire.
Presently, alterations in mechanics and the introduction of new moves are commendable, but a fighting game sequel wouldn’t be complete without new characters. UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes Torrent introduces three – a charming high-schooler with an enormous weaponized shield, a sophisticated secret-agent huntress wielding twin colossal pistols, and the levitating super-powered antagonist of the primary storyline. Antagonist Kuon, despite sharing numerous thematic and mechanic parallels with levitating charge-character Vatista, distinguishes himself by eschewing charge inputs and focusing more on melee combat, rendering him an excellent option for rush-down players adept at controlling their space.
Shield-wielder Tsurugi is exceptionally distinctive – aside from evident abilities to thwart projectiles and absorb attacks with armor, his character function places him in a stance that facilitates continuous transitions into a vast array of different attacks or abilities, making him genuinely enjoyable to play and genuinely vexing to contend against. Coquettish gunner Kaguya is perhaps my preferred member of the trio – despite being armed with guns, her emphasis is predominantly on medium-range combat, excelling at unpredictable jumps reminiscent of Noel Vermillion from Blazblue. She incorporates special moves that render her mix-ups remarkably unpredictable, furnishing an array of tools to devise truly unique combos.
In addition to customizable character colors, re-recorded voices, remastered tunes, and a selection of new stages, this package offers plenty to substantiate its value for fans of the franchise. I’ve relished every iteration of Under Night In-Birth that I’ve experienced, and this sequel is no different – it’s simple to grasp, challenging to master, and exceptionally entertaining at every tier of play. Among all the fighting games emerging presently, do not underestimate this one.
