War Hospital Torrent
War Hospital Torrent is a strategy game developed by Brave Lamb Studio and published by Nacon. The story happens in a place where sick and injured soldiers are taken care of during a big war. The issue is, it’s 1918, near the end of World War I, and the way of treating injuries isn’t very advanced yet. You play as Henry Wells, a retired person who is asked to take care of the many wounded soldiers from the final German attack.
The game doesn’t try to be exactly like history, but it feels like the period, like in books or movies. Short cartoons are showing the German attacks, and teams explore different events that make players make tough choices. Characters talk while they move around, giving players hints about how they’re doing. The overall feeling is sad, like being in a World War I trench.
Playing War Hospital is about classically managing things. There are different buildings in a ruined French town where soldiers are taken care of. First, they are sorted, then they have surgery, and finally, they recover. The goal is for patients to move through these steps smoothly while medics, specialists, and nurses do their work well.
But the war around the hospital creates big problems. There are too many wounded, so medical people have to work long hours and can get very tired. The buildings aren’t good enough, so players need to spend resources to make them better. And there’s not enough medicine, so the hospital’s manager needs to make more by building things and using engineering teams.
The recovery part of the hospital is very important. This is where everyone who survives surgery gets help from nurses to become healthy again. Players have to decide what to do next. Should they send the healthy soldiers back to the front, send them to headquarters for other jobs, or let them go home?
Players also need to watch out for their people getting tired. They need to schedule breaks and switch out teams to keep everything working. If a doctor gets too tired, it takes a long time for them to feel better, so it’s better to not accept too many wounded soldiers than to have nobody getting treated for a whole day.
The graphics in War Hospital aren’t amazing, but they show the feeling of World War I and how hard it was. Players spend most of their time looking from the top and deciding what to do with their doctors and nurses to save as many lives as possible. It takes a while to understand how to use the interface, but it lets players quickly assign staff and deal with problems.
The cartoons showing German attacks aren’t very good and can be skipped. There’s talking for important characters and announcements, which isn’t very natural but works. I didn’t like the sound that tells you when new patients arrive because it sounds too happy. The music fits the game well and sounds like an orchestra with war sounds mixed in.
War Hospital Torrent gives a good experience in managing things with a nice feeling. There aren’t many games set in World War I, and even fewer where you help people instead of hurting them. The managing part of the game is done well, but doing the same things over and over can get boring.
